How to read this

A location quotient (LQ) compares how concentrated a store type is in one state versus the country overall. An LQ of 1.0 means the state has exactly its 'fair share' of that category. An LQ of 2.0 means twice the national share — a genuine local specialty.

We computed the LQ for every store category in every state, then surfaced the categories each state over-indexes on most. Rare categories and tiny counts are filtered out so the signatures are real, not noise.

Frequently asked questions

What is a retail location quotient?
A location quotient compares a store category's share of a state's retail to that category's share nationally. Above 1.0 means the state over-indexes on that type of shop; 2.0 means double the national concentration.
How were these retail specialties calculated?
From a national count of 2.4 million independent storefronts categorized by type. For each state we divided the category's local share by its national share, then filtered out rare categories and small counts to keep only meaningful specialties.
